Have you ever noticed when you go to the garden center to buy strawberries plants that they usually offer two different types of plants: June-bearing and Everbearing? Do you know the difference between the two? The main difference is when and how often they will produce strawberries. Read below why their names really do explain it all.
JUNE-BEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS
June-bearing Strawberry plants will produce one large, concentrated harvest for a short timeframe (1-3weeks) in late early Summer typically around June. The strawberries produced from June-bearing plants will be larger, sweeter and firmer with more flavor in comparison to Everbearing Strawberry plants. Because June-bearing Strawberry are great for canning or freezing.
EVERBEARING STRAWBERRY PLANTS
Everbearing Strawberry plants produce fruit several times throughout the growing season making them ideal if you are looking for a continuous supply of strawberries. Everbearing Strawberry plants stay more compact with fewer runners. They produce a consistent supply of sweet, smaller sized strawberries in small yeilds making them great for snacking and eating fresh.
June-bearing strawberries produce one large crop in the spring/summer, have high yields, and are best for those looking for bulk harvests.
Everbearing strawberries produce smaller amounts of fruit over multiple harvests, making them great for continuous snacking throughout the season.
I have found that I really enjoy planting both Junebearing and Ever Bearing Strawberry plants so that you can have both a bulk harvest as well as continuous fruit throughout the season.
