HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT EGGS FOR THE INCUBATOR

Hatching healthy chicks starts before the incubator even turns on. Picking the right eggs makes a big difference in hatch rates and chick health, so it’s worth taking a few extra minutes to get it right.

Look for Clean, Normal Eggs
Start with eggs that are smooth, free of cracks, and properly shaped. Skip anything too pointy, wrinkled, or unusually round. Those don’t usually develop very well. If an egg is dirty, gently brush it off; avoid washing, which removes the natural protective coating (bloom).

Fresh is Best
Egg age matters. Fresh eggs (ideally under 7 days old) give the highest chance of hatching. Store them pointy end down in a cool spot and turn them once or twice daily until you’re ready to set them in the incubator.

Size and Consistency Count
Medium to large eggs tend to produce the healthiest chicks. Super small eggs may create weak chicks, while very large eggs can cause developmental issues. Look for eggs that are consistent in size and shape.

Fertile Eggs Only
Even perfect-looking eggs won’t hatch if they aren’t fertile. Make sure your flock is healthy and well-fed, with the proper rooster-to-hen ratio. Fertile eggs give you the best chance at strong, viable chicks.

Room Temperature Before Setting
Before placing eggs in the incubator, let them sit at room temperature for a few hours. This prevents condensation on the shell, which can interfere with proper development.

Choosing clean, fresh, correctly sized, and fertile eggs sets you up for a successful hatch. With a little care in selection, your incubator can do the rest.
